  • The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek loses its weak base engine and sees just a small price hike
  • When KBB expert test driver Russ Heaps reviewed the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek, he didn’t find much to complain about. His sole major critique of the little off-road wagon-like SUV read, “bland base engine.”

Russ Heaps is a powerful man.

Subaru has killed the Crosstrek’s bland base engine for 2026. Every 2026 Crosstrek will come with the more powerful engine previously available only on the higher trims. Power jumps from 152 horsepower to 180 for the base model.

Impressively, the base model sees its price rise just $435 despite the additional power.

Other changes for the 2026 model year include a new hybrid option making 194 hp. A heated steering wheel now comes standard on Limited and Wilderness trim levels. The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is expected to go on sale this fall.

    2026 Subaru Crosstrek Pricing

Prices include a $1,420 delivery fee, the same fee Subaru charges on 2025 models.

Model/TrimMSRP plus $1,420 Destination and Delivery
    Crosstrek$28,415
    Crosstrek Premium$29,415
    Crosstrek Sport$32,045
    Crosstrek Sport Hybrid$35,415
    Crosstrek Limited$34,415
    Crosstrek Limited Hybrid$36,415
    Crosstrek Wilderness$35,215

Polestar 2 Recalled Over Brake Issue /car-news/polestar-2-recalled-over-brake-issue/ /car-news/polestar-2-recalled-over-brake-issue/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 16:21:31 +0000 /?p=3445561&preview=true&preview_id=3445561 Polestar has recalled just two Polestar 2 sedans from model years 2021-2025 because a software update can cause their brakes to fail under very specific conditions.

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the problem occurs when a driver engages one-pedal driving mode and then coasts downhill for at least 1 minute and 30 seconds without touching the brake pedal. If that happens, “the customer may experience a loss of braking functionality.”

The company asks owners not to use one-pedal driving mode until the problem has been fixed.

The recall is nearly identical to one issued recently for many Volvo electric vehicles and hybrids. Polestar and Volvo share an owner (China’s Geely) and use many of the same parts.

Because the problem is software-related, Polestar will fix it with a software update. Most Polestar 2 vehicles receive updates over-the-air, so owners may not need to bring them in for repair. But an owner who has disabled updates might need to bring the car in to have the update installed.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.

Automakers recall many cars, sometimes more than once. Manufacturers try to reach every owner to warn them. However, some may fall through the system’s cracks, leaving some of us unknowingly driving recalled cars. Check our easy recall tool to determine if your car has any outstanding recalls.

    2026 Subaru Uncharted – Subie Debuts Small Electric SUV /car-news/2026-subaru-uncharted-subie-debuts-small-electric-suv/ /car-news/2026-subaru-uncharted-subie-debuts-small-electric-suv/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 16:12:50 +0000 /?p=3445558&preview=true&preview_id=3445558
  • The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is a subcompact all-electric SUV
  • It has more than 300 miles of range and up to 338 horsepower
  • It’s a twin to the upcoming Toyota C-HR
  • Subaru has gone from one to three electric vehicles (EVs) in a hurry. Late yesterday, the company unveiled its third, a subcompact SUV with an off-roader’s spirit and a Toyota twin. The 2026 Subaru Uncharted will go on sale in early 2026.

    The company hasn’t announced pricing.

Product of a Growing Subaru/Toyota Partnership

    • It’s now one of four Subarus with Toyota bones

The Uncharted will be one of four vehicles in Subaru dealerships that have near-clones at Toyota. Toyota owns a minority stake in the company, and the two have co-developed several models. Each company makes design and tuning tweaks to craft them slightly different, but they’re built in the same factory and use almost entirely common parts.

The gas-powered Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 have been twins since their debut for the 2012 model year.

Subaru’s first electric car, the Solterra, is largely identical to the Toyota bZ4X (to be renamed Toyota bZ for 2026).

The two companies recently revealed a larger vehicle on the same platform, to be sold as the Subaru Trailseeker and Toyota bZ Woodland.

The Uncharted shares most of its parts with the 2026 Toyota C-HR. We suspect even the name is an engineer’s joke about that (“we Un-C-HR’d it”).

In case you’re not confused yet, that one is a rebirth. Toyota sold a gas-powered C-HR from the 2018 to 2022 model years, and is resurrecting the name for an EV next year.

2026 Subaru Uncharted – Subie Debuts Small Electric SUV

The Uncharted Gives You Choices the C-HR Doesn’t

    • Subaru buyers will have a choice of front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD)
    • Toyota will sell only the AWD version

Toyota’s version comes in just one form — one that’s unusually powerful for a subcompact SUV. Subaru will offer buyers a choice of two, including a less-powerful version with longer range.

Both the C-HR and the Uncharted will be offered with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain making 338 horsepower. It has an estimated range of 290 miles between charges, and Subaru says this model will make up the bulk of sales.

But Subaru will also offer a second powertrain choice. A single-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD) version will deliver 221 hp (more than enough for a car this size) and a range of over 300 miles. Subaru promises “a lower price point,” but says this model “will be offered in limited numbers.”

So, if you want one, you may need to search for a dealership that has one to offer.

It will charge through a Tesla-style NACS port. Subaru promises, “In cold weather conditions, the Uncharted can recharge its battery from 10% to 80% in nearly 30 minutes thanks to an onboard battery preconditioning system.”

That speed is possible only with a DC fast charger — the refrigerator-sized units found at some highway rest stops. The Uncharted can accept up to 150 kW at a time, which is a respectable figure, but some DC fast chargers can put out energy faster than it can accept it.

2026 Subaru Uncharted – Subie Debuts Small Electric SUV

Muscular Look for Such a Small Car; Big Screen in a Simple Cabin

    • Subaru has gone boxier with its gas-powered cars, but sleek with EVs

The Uncharted doesn’t look exactly like its Toyota equivalent. Subaru designers have created unique front and rear fascias to set it slightly apart.

However, the C-HR’s trademark small rear doors with high-mounted handles are the giveaway.

It is, frankly, a good-looking little car. It looks like a tensed muscle, with a successful blend of curves and angles.

Recent Subaru gas-powered designs have been boxier and more suited to a Patagonia parking lot. The 2026 Subaru Outlook even abandoned its trademark wagon look for a more conventional SUV shape. But the Uncharted looks sportier.

Inside, Subaru’s familiar low-mounted, portrait-oriented touchscreen is nowhere to be found. Instead, a high-mounted 14-inch landscape-oriented screen dominates the space. It’s a big screen for a subcompact cabin. With little room for buttons or dials, the screen handles most cabin adjustments.

A squared-off steering wheel contributes to the sporty look. A copper accent down the horizontal center of the dash lends a touch of style.

Standard equipment includes dual wireless phone charging pads, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and dual USB-C chargers for rear seat passengers.

Subaru Now Has EV Twins for Its Best-Selling Gas Cars

    • Three models make up the bulk of Subaru sales
    • Each now has an electric equivalent

The arrival of the Uncharted gives Subaru an EV lineup that matches much of its gas-powered lineup.

Three models – the Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek – make up most of the company’s sales. Subaru has one of the most loyal fan bases of any automaker. There are a lot of people who buy or lease one Forester or Outback after another.

The company now has a way to offer those buyers an EV equivalent to any of its big three.

The Uncharted may be the most impressive of the three. More than 300 hp is unusual in the subcompact SUV class. Subaru promises a zero-to-60 mph time of less than five seconds and “impressive straight-line stability, handling, and grip on loose surfaces such as gravel, dirt, or snow through extensive chassis development.”

That’s far more performance than Crosstrek buyers are used to, and might even tempt some WRX fans to go electric.

10 Most Popular Electric Cars /best-cars/most-popular-electric-cars/ /best-cars/most-popular-electric-cars/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 12:00:00 +0000 /?p=261708&preview=true&preview_id=261708 According to Cox Automotive data, more than 607,000 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in the first half of 2025, or about 7.45% of all new vehicle sales. That is 1.5% more than this time last year, and a new record.

There are all-new electric vehicles going on sale every year, and more are coming. As a sign of the times, of the 10 best-selling EVs in the U.S., there are three models on this list that debuted for the 2024 model year, and three entries broke through to make this list for the first time. Not only are there more new models sold in America and more coming soon, but they are highly competitive, more affordable, and have struck a chord with shoppers. And with ranges that are as good as non-hybrid cars and standardized charging-plug choices, these EVs are becoming easier to live with on a day-to-day basis. Most charging stations can accommodate CCS and NACS connectors, as those two are the industry standards, and there are more charging stations than ever before. Road trips in an electric car are no longer a fingers-crossed affair.

So, which electric vehicles are the best-sellers? We’ve compiled the best-selling EVs for the first half of the 2025 calendar year, based on Kelley Blue Book parent company Cox Automotive data. As you would expect, Tesla still reigns supreme.

    1. Tesla Model Y

    2024-tesla-model-y-red-driving-front-3qtr.jpg

    Total units sold: 150,171

Staying in the top spot, Tesla’s compact SUV has up to 337 miles of range and room for five passengers. So far this year, the Model Y is the fourth-best-selling SUV in America. That’s a drop from last year, but still a very impressive accomplishment. Its starting price of $46,880 isn’t the lowest price in the segment, but its impressive range and excellent tech in the cabin make the Model Y a popular choice.

See Tesla Model Y models for sale near you

    2. Tesla Model 3

    2024-tesla-model-3-red-driving-front-3qtr.jpg

    Total units sold: 101,323

In second place is the Tesla Model 3, which shares platforms with the Model Y. And even though Tesla’s sales fell in 2025, the Model Y and Model 3 are head and shoulders above the competition. The Model 3 sold over 70,000 more vehicles than the next vehicle on this list. That’s an impressive feat, but not surprising considering that Tesla had a huge head start in the EV world over traditional automakers. The Model 3’s price starts at $44,130, and this car has a range of up to 363 miles.

See Tesla Model 3 models for sale near you

    3. Chevrolet Equinox EV

    2024-chevrolet-equinox-ev-blue-front-left-3qtr.jpg

    Total units sold: 27,749

Chevrolet’s all-new Equinox EV, which is longer and wider than its gas-powered sibling, is roomy, comfortable, and is an EV that is very easy to recommend. It has up to 319 miles of range, an easy-to-reconfigure interior, and loads of safety and entertainment tech. Even more impressive is its starting price, which for the 2025 model year is less than $35,000.

See Chevrolet Equinox EV models for sale near you

    4. Ford Mustang Mach-E

    2024-ford-mustang-mach-e-front-3qtr-4x3-1.jpg

    Total units sold: 21,785

There’s almost always some controversy when an automaker repurposes a classic name in a new way. Yes, this is an SUV and an EV, and it has Mustang in its name. But look beyond that and see what the Mustang Mach-E offers. It is quick, roomy, and provides up to 320 miles of range. And it’s surprising how well the Mustang design cues work on an SUV body. Pricing starts at $39,990.

    5. Hyundai Ioniq 5

    2024-hyundai-ioniq5-front-right-3qtr.jpg

Tesla Dual Motor Basics: What You Need to Know /car-advice/tesla-dual-motor-basics/ /car-advice/tesla-dual-motor-basics/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 12:00:00 +0000 /?p=2347011&preview=true&preview_id=2347011 Quick Facts About the Number of Tesla Motors
    • Increasing the motor count can either increase range or quickness.
    • Dual motors in a Tesla always translate into all-wheel drive (AWD).
    • The more motors a Tesla model has, the more expensive it is.

If one motor in a Tesla is good, then two motors should be better, right? If you are considering a Tesla or any other electric vehicle (EV) offering either one or two motors (some, including Tesla, offer even more), you might wonder what the differences are in the motor count. Here, we look into the one-, two-, or three-motor conundrum and provide some answers.

What Is a Dual Motor Tesla?

A Tesla with dual motors means the vehicle features a motor on each axle controlling power to the front and rear wheels. For example, the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y offer the choice of one or dual (two) electric motors. In those with one motor, the single motor is located on the rear axle, providing rear-wheel drive (RWD). Every new Model S and Model X comes standard with dual motors configured for all-wheel drive. In the case of the Model S, you can upgrade to the Model S Plaid, which expands the rear motor count to two (one for each rear wheel) for a total of three electric motors. Likewise, moving up to the Model X Plaid offers a tri-motor arrangement. You can order a Cybertruck with one, two, or three motors.

What Is the Difference Between One- and Two-Motor Teslas?

No matter the Tesla model, adding another motor results in some combination of increasing range, raising the top speed, and improving acceleration. In the case of the Model 3, Model Y, and the Cybertruck, adding that second motor also gains you all-wheel drive. According to Tesla’s reported specifications, here’s how the Tesla models and trims compare. The listed prices include the mandatory factory-to-dealer destination fee and $250 order fee.

Also, keep in mind that Tesla models are built in the U.S. For now, many Tesla models qualify for a Federal EV tax credit of $7,500, which is not reflected in the listed price. Tax credits end on September 30.

    Our Take

Because it provides the most efficient use of energy, we think a one-motor Tesla makes the most sense when the goal is maximizing range from every recharging. However, in climates where all-wheel drive is a necessity, we would be willing to trade off a bit of range for foul-weather sure-footedness. As for quickness, unless you just want the bragging rights that come with a sub-3.0-second zero-to-60 time or to scare the blazes out of the carpool, we could be quite content with a 5.0- or 6.0-second run up to 60 mph delivered by single-motor models.

2025 Kia Sportage vs. 2025 Volkswagen Taos Comparison /comparison/kia-sportage-vs-volkswagen-taos/ /comparison/kia-sportage-vs-volkswagen-taos/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 12:00:00 +0000 /?p=2499297&preview=true&preview_id=2499297 Small SUVs have proliferated on American roads and in shoppers’ driveways over the past decade, and now make up the most popular and most crowded vehicle segments. With each model introduction, these SUVs get added features, better technology, and smarter use of space. The 2025 Kia Sportage, for example, is among the roomiest of the compact SUV set, while the 2025 Volkswagen Taos — technically a subcompact — has more cargo room than some rivals a size up. This is all good news for shoppers, as more and better choices keep rivals on their toes and give buyers ever-improving options.

Here we compare two enticing ones — the 2025 Kia Sportage and the 2025 Volkswagen Taos.

    2025 Kia Sportage

    2025 Kia Sportage Hybrid

The 2025 Kia Sportage lineup itself is surprisingly vast. The brand’s compact SUV and best-selling model is available in seven trims, from the base LX to the top-line X-Pro Prestige. Powering them is a 187-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, while all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional or standard on the upmarket X-Pro trims. The Sportage is also available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, which we review separately.

    Kia Sportage Highlights

Dual-screen displays: All Kia Sportage trims except the base LX come standard with a prominent 12.3-inch center touchscreen with navigation (the LX has an 8-inch screen), and all come with either a 12.2-inch or 12.3-inch instrument display. In addition to providing lots of helpful information, these screens look great.

X-Pro trims: In the X-Pro configuration, you get off-road features such as extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and off-road settings for the all-wheel-drive system. The Taos offers no such off-road-oriented trim.

Excellent warranty coverage: Kia offers unbeatable warranties. They include a 5-year/60,000-mile standard warranty, plus powertrain coverage for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. VW can’t touch that.

Check this week’s Fair Purchase Price or see the Sportage models for sale near you.

    2025 Volkswagen Taos

    2025 Volkswagen Taos SEL

The Taos may be VW’s smallest and least-expensive SUV, but it punches above its weight. Like its bigger siblings, the Tiguan and Atlas, the Taos has more interior space than its exterior dimensions might suggest. Case in point is the cargo area. The 2025 Taos provides up to 65.9 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded. That’s less than 10 shy of the Sportage, which is a class size up. For the 2025 model year, the Taos further improves with more horsepower — 174 — a standard 8-inch touchscreen display, and updated styling.

    Volkswagen Taos Highlights

Digital Cockpit: This digital instrument cluster gives the Taos a tech-forward and sophisticated feel, which is not surprising since this technology first debuted on Audi luxury vehicles. Now it’s standard on every Taos.

Wireless phone charger: Standard in the upper trims, we love the ease of setting your phone down and letting it charge while you drive.

Wireless App-Connect: Also standard in all but the base model, this allows wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making connection all that easier amid our busy lives.

Check this week’s Fair Purchase Price or see the Taos models for sale near you.

    Similarities

Though they are in different class sizes, the Kia Sportage and VW Taos aren’t far off on cargo space and horsepower. We like that both also use a traditional geared transmission versus the continuously variable type that tends to drone under hard acceleration.

    Conclusion

Your space needs, budget, and warranty expectations will factor into your decision between these two. The VW Taos is smaller and thus unsurprisingly less expensive, yet still brings ample power and space, making it a good value. The Kia Sportage, however, isn’t all that more expensive and has more space, more power, a far longer warranty, and a wider breadth of trims.

    KBB Review Highlights

The 2022 BMW X5 is still leading the charge for midsize luxury SUVs, innovating powertrain types and features in the class, while also pushing the boundaries of design and performance. Behind the wheel, the base X5 sDrive40i and xDrive40i are rewarding to drive, with plenty of power for most people. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid offers an even more efficient alternative, while the M50i takes performance up to a level just short of the M-Division variant. Inside, the X5 is comfortable, especially in the front row, although the second-row seating is suitable for even taller adults as well. Adding the optional third-row seating also adds air suspension, but the third row is best reserved for kids only. The X5’s design is also customizable, with a wide range of exterior paint choices and interior finishes, as well as a range of upgrade wheels to choose from — all the way up to 22 inches.

    2022 BMW X5 PHEV

The base X5 sDrive40i offers rear-wheel drive (RWD), while the X5 xDrive40i adds all-wheel drive (AWD). The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) gets all-wheel drive by default, as does the performance-focused M50i. The extreme-performance X5 M is considered a separate model. The base powertrain, shared by the 40i models, includes a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The xDrive45e PHEV adds a more robust hybrid drive system that can be charged independently and provide up to 31 miles of all-electric range. At the top of the X5 heap is the M50i, rated for 523 horsepower and delivering impressive acceleration. The 2022 BMW X5 saw the discontinuation of wireless charging availability due to chip shortages, but otherwise, there aren’t many significant features you’ll miss out on with this year of the X5.

The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

    Introduction

The 2022 Grand Cherokee is a midsize sport utility vehicle from Jeep. It offers a remarkable blend of capability, performance, and functional luxury. The Grand Cherokee, a longtime favorite in the midsize segment, is brilliant as a well-equipped daily driver and shines as an off-road champion. Ultimately, 2022 was an eventful year for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Remaining inventory of the outgoing “WK2” generation was sold alongside an all-new “WL” generation, both for the 2022 model year. Since most of the CPO models you find will be from the newer generation, that’s the one we’re focusing on here. Jeep debuted a 3-row version called the Grand Cherokee L in 2021, which we cover as a separate model.

    KBB Review Highlights

The 2022 redesign of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was its first in a little over a decade, making it a great model year to shop for on the CPO market. Its significant makeover was more than just an aesthetic refresh. In addition to a modernized look inside and out, the new-for-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a new chassis, thoroughly updated technology, and luxurious options that make it more competitive with pricier luxury SUVs. The new generation remained about the same size as its predecessor, with generous room for passengers and cargo. A few features we love about the 2022 Grand Cherokee include: the Selec-Terrain traction management system with drive modes for any situation; the feature-rich and user-friendly Uconnect 5 infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; and the sublime McIntosh 19-speaker audio system that’s one of the best car audio systems we’ve ever tested. From a practical family SUV in the lower trims to a bona fide luxury SUV in the top trims, there’s something for everyone in the Grand Cherokee model range.

2022 Jeep® Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve

Engine options for the 2022 Grand Cherokee include a trusty V6, which makes the most sense for most buyers, and a Hemi V8, which was discontinued in the 2-row Grand Cherokee in 2023. If you want the latest generation of the Grand Cherokee with a V8 and two rows of seats, 2022 is the only model year with that configuration available. A plug-in hybrid option dubbed the Grand Cherokee 4xe was also introduced in 2022. Naturally, being a Jeep, multiple 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems are available, giving the Grand Cherokee varying degrees of off-road capability. Quadra-Trac I is suitable for snowy roads and mild off-roading. Quadra-Trac II adds a 2-speed transfer case with low-range gearing, and Quadra-Drive II delivers superior off-road capability with an electronic limited-slip differential and the ability to send 100% of the engine’s torque to a single wheel.

2025 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. 2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Comparison /comparison/ford-ranger-raptor-vs-chevrolet-colorado-zr2/ /comparison/ford-ranger-raptor-vs-chevrolet-colorado-zr2/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 12:00:00 +0000 /?p=3358223&preview=true&preview_id=3358223 The 2025 Ford Ranger Raptor and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 are hardcore off-road variants of their respective midsize pickup trucks. The Ranger and Colorado benefit from recent redesigns that upped everything from safety content and tech touches to go-anywhere capability and extra passing power.

This generation of Colorado has been around for a couple of years, while the Ranger was all-new last year.

How do these rough-and-tumble trucks compare? Let’s explore the highlights of each to find out.

    2025 Ford Ranger Raptor

    2025-ford-ranger-raptor-3qtr

The 2025 Ford Ranger is available in four trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, and Raptor. Standard touches include smartphone projection, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 bundle of driver assistance features. The mighty Raptor comes loaded with go-anywhere hardware.

    Ford Ranger Raptor Highlights

Twin-turbo V6: The Raptor is more than its engine, of course. But man, what an engine this midsize truck has under its hood. A twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 delivers 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque via a 10-speed automatic transmission with 4-wheel drive (4WD). Extra off-road equipment fitted to this desert-racer Ford truck includes a lifted and strengthened suspension, Fox shock absorbers, and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Extra drive modes: The Raptor also comes with more selectable drive modes than the standard-grade models: Off-Road, Baja, and Rock Crawl. We guess you can figure out which type of terrain each is tailored to.

12.4-inch touchscreen: Because it sits atop the Ranger lineup, the Raptor comes with the larger of two infotainment touchscreens. Running SYNC 4A software, this vertically mounted screen is simple to navigate and packed with features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, a wireless charging pad, and a 360-degree parking camera. You also get a booming Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Trail-friendly size: Sometimes too much of a good thing is exactly that. This is particularly true when trying to navigate an XL-sized vehicle on narrow trails. Because it’s smaller and less wide than its big brother, the F-150 Raptor, the Ranger Raptor is more adept at getting through tight spaces.

Check this week’s Fair Purchase Price or see Ranger models near you.

    2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

    2025-chevrolet-colorado-zr2-bison-front-quarter.jpg

The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado comes in five trims: WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2, plus the ZR2 Bison Edition, a package you can add to the ZR2. It costs less than the Ford Ranger Raptor, though the Chevy needs a few extra-cost options to match the Ford’s off-road chops.

Standard equipment is generous even on the base WT trim. It only gets better when ponying up for the ZR2, which comes with extras like dual-zone climate control, remote start, heated front seats, and a spray-on bed liner.

    Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Highlights

All-terrain gear: Getting the ZR2 over rough terrain is a turbocharged 2.7-liter 4-cylinder that produces 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Notice that the torque figure matches the Ranger Raptor, even though the Chevy’s engine is considerably smaller and uses only one turbocharger. Off-road additions include 4-wheel drive, 33-inch all-terrain tires, Multimatic dampers, a 3-inch suspension lift, and front and rear locking differentials.

ZR2 Bison: The ZR2 Bison is even more capable. For an additional $11,700 over the cost of the ZR2, it comes with a bed-mounted spare tire, a Boron steel underbody fuel tank skid plate, a front steel skid plate, rocker protectors, steel bumpers, beadlock-capable 17-inch wheels, and much more.

Standard safety gear: Chevy didn’t simply make the Colorado more adept at off-roading; it made sure this truck is safer in all driving situations. Standard safety items include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, and rear-seat reminder.

User-friendly tech: Like the new Ranger, the Colorado ZR2 packs an intuitive infotainment system with clear menus and quick response times. This 11.3-inch screen is within easy reach and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Check this week’s Fair Purchase Price or see Colorado models near you.

    Similarities

We couldn’t ask for two more evenly matched trucks. The Ranger Raptor and Colorado ZR2 are bristling with adventure-loving gear that truck owners demand in the most capable of models.

    Conclusion

Does anyone have a coin we can borrow? This is literally a toss-up decision. Your decision could depend on a test drive or vehicle availability at your local dealerships.

Ultimately, the Ranger Raptor is slightly more capable of tackling all types of terrain. And having the most powerful engine in its segment is another strong selling point.

On the other hand, the ZR2 Bison package gives the Colorado the extra equipment needed to match its Ford rival. Whether you need that degree of off-road capability is up to you.
